More Than Feeding: How Breastfeeding Support Can Help Heal Birth Trauma

As Birth Trauma Awareness week comes to a close, I wanted to end on a positive note. Research has show that positive breastfeeding experience can HEAL birth trauma.

I see this every Day.

The reason I see this is that I allow TIME for the families in my clinic. Time to work through complex physical and emotional traumas. Time to assess and manage EVERY aspect of postpartum care, not just one individual problem. Time to rest, recover and build the village we all need around us.

The Reality

1 in 3 mothers describe their childbirth as a traumatic experience. A smaller share go on to develop a diagnosed postnatal PTSD.

The Overlooked Link

6x less likely to start breastfeeding — the gap between mums with postnatal PTSD and those without.

Trauma Informed Care Looks Like

  1. Allowing time to listen when a mother is ready to share

  2. Zero Pressure. Any feeding choice, fully supported

  3. Physical pain treated as seriously as emotional pain

  4. Support that doesn’t stop at Discharge

Our model of care is improving breastfeeding rates, improving mental health, improving physical recovery.

We are training medical and allied health staff in this holistic approach to postnatal care.

We are advocating for equality in a healthcare system built for men.

Birth trauma is not the end of the story.

If your birth didn’t go how you hoped, or feeding has brought up more than you expected — come talk to us. The service we offer allows for time to learn, time to heal, and time to grow. We are changing the postnatal story and helping families heal. We invite you to support us in advocating to make our model the standard of care for all women.

If receiving expert breastfeeding support, or having a positive experience has helped you heal, we’d love to hear from you.

My dream is to have our full postnatal support offered as an option for early discharge for all families.
