The One Rule of Triple Feeding
Why Every Triple Feeding Journey Needs a STOP Plan
Triple Feeding is a marathon that requires close supervision. It should NEVER be started without a CLEAR plan to stop. It should not be done for endless weeks.
Mothers who are struggling with milk transfer or low supply are already exhausted and stressed. Placing this addititonal burden on them can be extremely damaging to their mental health. While this technique can be helpful in the short term while working on breastfeeding techniques and supply, it can negatively impact direct breastfeedin due to bottle preferences, reduced feeding frequency and reduced feeding drive at the breast.
The Problem
Triple Feeding is a special kind of HELL.
I believe it is a huge risk factor for postnatal anxiety and depression. This technique is meant to be done for a very short period of ime, yet women are left triple feeling for weeks and sometimes months.
While babies are being encouraged to feed at the breast, the large volumes of milk being given after the breastfeed often delay feeds and reduce hunger drive, resulting in worse milk trasnfer at the breast.
What You Can Do
If you are asked to start triple feeding, make sure it is under the guidance of an IBCLC.
DO NOT LEAVE THE ROOM UNLESS YOU HAVE A REVIEW BOOKED AND/OR A PLAN TO COME OFF TRIPLE FEEDING!
Limit the feeding time to 60 minutes. This includes the feed, the pump and the bottle.
Offer smaller bottle feeds earlier in the day and larger ones later in the day to increase your baby’s feeds when your supply is best.
A baby that is latching well is better than ANY pump on the market. If you have a willing participant, FEED, FEED, FEED!
Regular review is required for any mum doing Triple Feeding. This review MUST include a mental health assessment.
