At MIWM our aim is to nurture the mother-infant bond with gentle and thoughtful guidance around infant feeding and sleep. While our main focus is on breastfeeding, we acknowledge the rich diversity in our families and will provide expert support in mixed and formula feeding dyads. Infant sleep and settling is highly dependent on feeding and bonding. Our approach aims to nourish the parent-infant interaction through rich sensory engagement, close physical and emotional connection and consistent evidence-based advice, while respecting individual parenting values.
Why should you see a doctor for Breastfeeding Issues?
While we aim to shift away from the medicalisation of breastfeeding and infant settling, extensive medical training enables the provision of evidence based, consistent care to all families. MIWM supports breastfeeding in all women who choose to do so, including those with conditions that were previously thought to be incompatible with breastfeeding. As such we are in a unique position to be able to investigate and treat medical conditions in the context of breastfeeding, resulting in much longer and more successful breastfeeding journeys.
Does MIWM do home visits?
No. We do not offer home visits through MIWM as we believe that encouraging a family to leave the house in the early weeks post-partum is beneficial for mental health and parenting confidence, and also allows us to perform medical investigations or interventions if necessary.
When is the best time to visit MIWM?
While we are happy to assist with any postpartum feeding, sleep or settling issues, prevention is definitely better than cure. Early third trimester is often a good time for an antenatal consultation, but we will happily see you at any stage of your pregnancy or post-partum period. If you are interested in Induced Lactation, an appointment in 1st or early 2nd trimester is ideal.
What to expect at your first appointment
Your first appointment will be 1hr long and will involve a comprehensive medical history and examination of both mother and baby. For infant feeding consultations it is preferable to observe a feed if possible.
Please ensure that your baby is present for the appointment and ideally ready for a feed. Do not withhold a feed if your baby needs it, but consider only giving half a feed to ensure that a thorough assessment can be performed.
Please bring any bottles, nipple shields, or other equipment that are aiding you to feed your infant (Breast pumps are not necessary unless you would like assistance with them).
Please bring your baby’s “green book” to the appointment.
If you have been referred for tongue-tie assessment, it may be treated on the day, but may also require a subsequent appointment.
You will leave the consultation with a breastfeeding or settling plan for your family and may or may not require follow-up.
You may be referred for imaging, pathology or for specialist review, depending on your clinical presentation.
