BREASTFEEDING SERVICES

While our main focus is on breastfeeding, we acknowledge the rich diversity in our families and provide expert support in mixed and formula feeding dyads.

Antenatal Breastfeeding Preparation

At MIWM we believe that prevention is better than cure, so come in for an antenatal consultation to discuss any infant feeding concerns including but not limited to:

• Diabetes, PCOS, breast assessments
• Overcoming previous breastfeeding challenges
• Induced lactation for surrogacy and same sex parents (best done as early as possible in the pregnancy)
• Education regarding common breastfeeding problems and how to avoid or overcome them
• Antenatal expression and storage of colostrum

Infant Feeding Support

The vast majority of infant feeding issues can be improved through optimizing fit and hold. At MIWM we will support your infant feeding needs through:

• Optimising positioning, milk transfer and infant growth
• Mixed and formula feeding support, including expressing and storing milk
• Tongue tie assessment and management

Maternal Breastfeeding Support

While breastfeeding is the most natural infant feeding option, it is still a learnt behaviour by both mother and baby. Should you run into problems we are able to assist with:

• Pain, engorgement, low supply, over supply
• Mastitis, breast abscesses, blocked ducts, thrush, vasospasm, dermatitis
• Return-to-work planning including expressing and storing milk, introduction of bottles, gentle weaning

INFANT AND TODDLER SLEEP & SETTLING SUPPORT

Sleep deprivation and an unsettled baby can be very distressing for families, and knowing about normal infant behaviour can go a long way towards alleviating much of this distress.

At MIWM we believe in gentle sleep and settling methods that will be based on each individual family’s parenting ideals and values. Our approach aims to nourish the parent-infant interaction through rich sensory engagement, close physical and emotional connection and consistent evidence-based advice.

Your baby will have a thorough examination to exclude medical causes for his or her behaviour prior to implementing any strategy.  We have practitioners trained in Neuro-protective Developmental Care (Possums) but will tailor the approach to meet the needs of each unique family.
